We are sailing parents trying to figure it all out. Staying out of the way but hoping to connect our kids with the best opportunities. We see the best sailors vanish from our local stage at a young age and start competing year round in Florida or overseas. We see seemingly random groups of sailors suddenly having amazing opportunities to compete in youth big boat regattas or be coached by amazing people that we did not even know existed. Our local programs are worn out from the day to day and simply do not have the time or energy to navigate the difficult pathways to the top of the sport for each individual sailor. So what is the solution? No clue. :) This sport is filled with hard working and well meaning coaches and administrators who actually know something about the sport and they have not been able to pull it off so I am very clear on my limited ability to improve the outlook.
We can, however, share what we do know and facilitate time on the water. Every weekend teenagers launch from SSA without a coach or costs and go sail for the pure pleasure of the sport and each other's company. In doing this, they improve and learn from each other, discuss upcoming opportunities and build their network. Parents connect and find ways to lower costs and improve access for their sailors. And sailing professionals outside the junior sailing pyramid are able to mix in and share their knowledge. We are contemplating a regatta in the spring with sailors competing in three or four boat types to foster growth in multiple classes. Listen to the sailors and support them. Not everything needs to be a clinic.
The other thing we have come to appreciate is that high level sailing is always happening somewhere near us. If you can be flexible on the type of boat and group then you can almost always find something amazing to participate in every month. This website is an attempt to address that vacuum of information on opportunities and information on fleets and present opportunities and connections to get you started. Willing to contribute? Are you a top level sailor, sailmaker or naval architect willing to come and share your information for free one morning? Do you have a RIB and are willing to hang out on the water for a few hours each weekend and provide catastrophic breakdown support so that more youth feel comfortable launching without a coach? Let us know and we can connect.
Sailing is filled with amazing people and the more of them we can connect the more fun we can have! -Nicholas
Traveling and representing your country is an honor and a highlight for most sailors. But did you know that you do not always have to qualify through your Class to do it? Find an opportunity and go!
SailCoach is an example of an organization that takes sailors from around the world, coordinates charters and helps sailors compete for their country at top tier events.
We had a group of 3 from Annapolis go together this past summer and they loved it!
